TIME TRAVELLING

For School Tours

Fun filled, hands on day exploring the wonder of life upstairs and downstairs
Costumes, creative play and real artefacts in stunning Rockfield Estate, Kells County Meath

Rockfield School Tours are renowned for the ‘craic’ – throughout our group led activities, children dress up as servants donning caps, aprons and waistcoats. Delving into the busy working life of dairy maids, yard hands, laundry maids and kitchen staff. Who could have known that washing and sweeping could be so fun!

Fun and laughter fill the halls and walls of Rockfield House, when the children ‘change their name, change their clothes and change the angle of their nose’ as they dress up and become Lords and Ladies of the Manor. Fancy finery combined with captivating activities – time tested parlour games, a deportment class and a dance led by Lady Rockfield are always a highlight.

The interactive walled garden trail tells of life in 1800 Ireland, while a visit to the basement gives opportunities for frights and laughter alike. Guided by their leaders, the children will meet some of our many farm animals. Sheep with lambs and cows with calves at foot graze the fields, while Edwin and Egburt our Peacocks, Francie the Cob, Blossom the Falabella pony, Fred and Ted our goats and the bucket fed calves and pet lambs are often eager to enjoy a hand fed nibble along the farm trail.

At Rockfield House, we embrace how children’s play has evolved and changed throughout the ages. After participating in the traditional art of Sugan Rope Making, the children experience the fun of the fields of bygone times as they learn to skip, and play ball with their straw ropes. They also get the opportunity to raise their heartbeats on the pedal go-carts, revel in giant bubble blowing, and create and construct in the Domino Den – a great activity to develop teamwork among the class.

Lesson plans are easy after a school tour at Rockfield House as the activities compliment and enhance classroom learning as all these immersive learning experiences stay with the children for a lifetime.

Delicious scones, tea and coffee are served in the drawing room – complimentary for all adults who accompany the group on the day.
